Computer-Written Musical Set For West End Premiere
A musical written and composed by computers is about to open in London’s West End. Beyond the Fence was conceived by machines, from a statistical study of what makes a Broadway hit.
The musical was modelled on a big data study of the ‘recipe for success’ in hit musicals.
Experts at the Machine Learning Group at Cambridge University investigated everything from the importance of romance and death to a plot, its emotional structure, and cast size, in a range of shows.
Beyond the Fence is set in 1982. It focuses on a mother and daughter protesting at the Greenham Common peace camp and their relationship with a US airman.
